Richard began his military career in the United States Marine Corps from 1986 to 1990, attending boot camp at Paris Island before serving in artillery units. After leaving the Marines, he answered the call to serve once again, joining the United States Army in 1992, where he served until his retirement in 2011 as a Staff Sergeant.
