Johnny Hickerson Navy "River Rat" Veteran 1963-1967 May 18, 2026

Following his Quilt of Valor presentation at the Warrior Exhibit in Fayetteville, Tennessee, Johnny Hickerson sat down with Linda Williams and Don Counts to share his story of service during the Vietnam War. Johnny served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1967 as a “River Rat,” operating in the dangerous rivers and waterways of Vietnam. During this interview, he shares vivid memories from his time in combat, offering a firsthand account of the realities faced by those who served during wartime. Toward the end of the interview, Johnny’s sister, Cathy Hickerson, joins the conversation to share heartfelt memories about the emotional toll military service takes on families waiting and worrying back home during times of war. This interview was recorded at the Warrior Exhibit in Fayetteville, Tennessee, preserving the voices and experiences of those who served and the families who stood beside them.
