Larry Diestelow Army Veteran from 1975 to 1981

In this interview from the Warrior Exhibit, Don Counts sits down with U.S. Army veteran Larry Diestelow, who served from 1975 to 1981, to hear his story of military service, discipline, family, and life after the Army. Joined by Linda Williams, Larry reflects on growing up in Chicago, joining the Army at just 17 years old through the delayed entry program, and how that decision changed the course of his life after losing both of his parents at a young age. He shares vivid memories of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, technical training at Fort Sill, and serving at Schofield Barracks. Larry also discusses military discipline, communications work, raising a young family during service, and how the skills he learned carried into civilian careers in auto body repair, diesel mechanics, and later at Frito-Lay. This interview also offers reflections on patriotism, work ethic, and the challenges of raising grandchildren in today’s world.
